SSRIs and Suicide
Joshua on the right six years before his suicideYou may wonder why I bring up SSRIs [selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor].
Joshua had been on several SSRIs by the time of his death. Because Joshua was of age, he could make his own choices in life. He chose anti-depressant drugs that did not work. He began taking them after the time his photo was taken. He took them for five years and he became more depressed, withdrawn, and sullen.
We made an appointment with his psychiatrist and told him Joshua was worse and we feared for his sanity. Even his life. We begged the doctor to counsel Josh and pull him off of the drugs he was taking.
The doctor smiled, listened, and assured us Joshua was doing well. What? He did not know Joshua. He did not live with Joshua. How could he say that?
After Joshua's suicide, and we found his bottles of prescriptions. My husband spoke with a doctor who shed light on the medications our son was taking. Two of them were SSRIs and the doctor explained these drugs have the ability to cause suicidal thoughts.
We were devasted. Angry. Hurt beyond belief.
I can't help wondering if Joshua's psychiatrist knew what the SSRIs were capable of doing to a human brain.
I can't turn back time to right a wrong, but I can spread awareness of these potential killer drugs that are on the market.
